Higher or Lower Unlimited: Population and Area

Keep the streak alive

In unlimited Higher or Lower you keep playing until you make a mistake. Each round shows the country you already know and a new challenger. Decide whether the challenger has a higher or lower value, and the challenger becomes the next reference point. Switch between Population and Area with the buttons above the cards. Population figures come from the World Bank 2023 estimates and areas from the mledoze/countries dataset.

Strategy

Population and area reward different knowledge. For population, remember the giants (India, China, the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil) and the fact that many small European countries have fewer people than a single big Asian city. For area, Russia, Canada, the United States, China, Brazil and Australia dominate, while deserts make some low-population countries, such as Mongolia, Algeria and Kazakhstan, enormous. When two countries look close, think about population density and climate.

Tips

• Anchor on round numbers: about 8 billion people live on Earth, and roughly 40 countries have over 50 million.
• Island nations are usually small in area but can be large in population (Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia).
